This week’s #FridayFeeling is all about awesome music from amazing Black films.
First, Jordan Peele gifted us with this release of “I Got 5 on It (feat. Michael Marshall) [Tethered Mix from Us]” by Luniz and orchestration by Michael Abels in anticipation of the release of the full Us soundtrack. Let’s be honest–even though the Us trailer was straight fire, a lot of us have been replaying that trailer just for the horrific, genius remix. Now, we can play it on our favorite music platform and freak out our friends in the process.

Second, The ChopStars released the mixtape If Beale Street Was Chopped on Audiomack. As you can infer, the mixtape riffs on Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk and its themes of love to bring a lush chopped-and-screwed audioscape. The 27-track mixtape, which features chopped versions of popular songs by Patti LaBelle, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan and others, was promoted by Barry Jenkins on his Twitter page.
The feeling of being a kid circa 1989 and going to the 79th St. flea market to buy Oldie Goldie tapes from the mixtape man. OR — the spirit @BealeStreet was written & made in ???????? Much love @candlestickem + @OGRONC ???????? This is… IF BEALE STREET WAS CHOPPED???? https://t.co/7SaR0skSU7

There are a lot of favorites on this mixtape, but as a Bootsy Collins fan, I have to personally rank “I’d Rather Be With You (Chopped Not Slopped) as my favorite.
And hearing Billy Preston’s version of “My Country Tis of Thee” makes me think it should go alongside Anthony Hamilton and Whitney Houston’s version of the national anthem as three of the best versions of patriotic songs ever.
Check it out on Audiomack for free.
