During Toronto International Film Festival press for The Hate U Give, stars Issa Rae, Anthony Mackie, Sabrina Carpenter and the novel’s author, Angie Thomas, stopped by the Variety TIFF studio.

Of course, The Hate U Give dives into race in America, so the actors and author were asked what they’d say to those people who “don’t see color.”

“Tell them to get some glasses!” said Mackie. “The problem is not that you see color; the problem is what you think when you see that color.”

“You’re basically saying, ‘I’m ignoring every issue because I don’t see color. I’m ignoring the fact that my color may be more privileged than your color and may not experience the same things as your color. It’s so important to acknowledge these things and make the change,” said the Insecure creator and star.
