Focus Features has released the first trailer for The High Note.

The film is Tracee Ellis Ross’s first major role in a film in over a decade and it seems to be the biggest movie role of her career so far. The movie also stars Dakota Johnson, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Ice Cube.

The official description: Set in the dazzling world of the LA music scene comes the story of Grace Davis (Ross), a superstar whose talent, and ego, have reached unbelievable heights. Maggie (Johnson) is Grace’s overworked personal assistant who’s stuck running errands but still aspires to her childhood dream of becoming a music producer. When Grace’s manager (Cube) presents her with a choice that could alter the course of her career, Maggie and Grace come up with a plan that could change their lives forever.

Initially known as Covers, the film was initially set to be directed by up-and-coming Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu, but Nisha Ganatra was attached to the project after the casting announcement of Ross and Johnson. Focus Features is distributing in the U.S. while Universal has the rights internationally.
