Although The Mayor hasn’t been exactly a huge success for ABC, the network isn’t giving up just yet.

They aren’t pulling the plug on the show after its winter finale, and instead, they’ve ordered three more scripts.

Despite not having great ratings on its side, The Mayor has achieved strong critical reviews and acclaim for its likable cast, headlined by its young star, Brandon Micheal Hall (read our interview with him here).

Deadline is reporting that they hear ABC may try to get an earlier time slot for the show. Right now, it has a black-ish lead-in, but has stacked competition, including This Is Us on NBC at the same time.

Also, keep in mind that The Mayor is from ABC Studios, which could probably be why the show is getting a chance. Kevin (Probably) Saves The World, which follows The Mayor and is another ABC Studios production, has also been given a lifeline — an additional 3-episode order.

Regardless, ordering additional scripts means the network has some confidence in the show.

The Mayor stars Hall as Courtney Rose, an outspoken, idealistic rapper who runs for office as a publicity stunt and actually gets elected. He surprises everyone (including himself) when he has a natural knack for the job and slowly transforms City Hall. Series regulars are Yvette Nicole Brown, Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spears, and Lea Michele.
