Everybody Hates Chris creator Ali LeRoi has signed on to direct the indie drama film The Obituary of Tunde Johnson.

USC student Stanley Kalu wrote the script, which follows “a wealthy, Black, high school senior who falls victim to an endless time loop of police brutality.”

His script won a $1 million screenplay competition through The Launch.

Production on the film will begin later this month.

LeRoi, who also created Are We There Yet (the TV series), won an Emmy for The Chris Rock Show. He recently wrote and directed episodes of Survivor’s Remorse. As far as films, he co-wrote and produced projects like Pootie Tang and Head of State.

Last year, LeRoi inked an overall deal with CBS Television Studios.
