The Resort, Peacock’s new dark comedy thriller, is a genre mashup with twists that folks won’t see coming. The William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milioti-led series is described as a “generational, coming-of-age love story disguised as a fast-paced mystery about the disappointment of time. An anniversary trip puts a marriage to the test when the couple finds themselves embroiled in one of the Yucatan’s most bizarre unsolved mysteries that took place fifteen years prior.”
Milioti said in a recent interview with Shadow and Act, “I think I was really drawn in by how many different genres or it becomes/is its own genre, because it has a leg and a foot in so many different doors [laughs].’
Harper explained that Milloti wasn’t signed on yet when he was attached to the series, but he was drawn in by the plot at hand.
He explained, “I think the thing that really sort of drew me in about the story was that [it] jumps across so many different tones and genres and textures and stuff that I was like, ‘Am I the right dude for this?’ Because I think that there’s a part of it where you know what you would do when you go into a story. You have a vision of how it’s going to all come together and the kind of choices you’re going to wind up making, and with this one, I had no idea whatsoever. That was really exciting. And Cristin coming on, we’ve worked together before and I know that she is an incredible, incredible artist. So for me was just like, ‘Oh, this is great.’ And also, it’s really great to be able to work with folks that you can learn something from, as far as putting the story together, someone that can put stories together confidently and allow it to also be sort of weird and not necessarily be by the numbers. That’s really exciting to me, like the chance to work with really great artists but then also feel a little bit out of my depth and also to feel like I did when I first started out in this business.”
Episode 4, which debuts on Thursday, contains a jaw-dropping bombshell of a moment that is sure to have viewers buzzing about so many theories.
“At the end of that mic drop at the end of episode 4 [and] everything that’s coming after that, I think I just loved that you think it’s one thing and then when that happens, you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m dealing with something that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before,” said Milioti. “It’s such an insane moment.”
