The Satanic Temple, Warner Bros. Television and Netflix have reached a settlement regarding TST’s $50 million defamation and copyright infringement lawsuit against Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
The initial suit accused the entertainment companies of showcasing the goat-like deity Baphomet in a poor light. The statue of Baphomet is featured at the magical school Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) attends, The Academy of Unseen Arts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Baphomet is a historical deity which has a complex history, having been associated with accusations of devil worship against the Knight Templar,” TST wrote in their suit, adding that Warner Bros. and Netflix’s usage of the deity “as the central focal point of the school associated with evil, cannibalism and murder blurs and tarnishes the TST Baphomet with Children as a mark of TST.”
After reaching a settlement, Stuart de Haan, the attorney for TST, wrote a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“The Satanic Temple is pleased to announce that the lawsuit it recently filed against Warner Bros. and Netflix has been amicably settled,” he wrote. “The unique elements of the Satanic Temple’s Baphomet statue will be acknowledged in the credits of episodes which have already been filmed. The remaining terms of the settlement are subject to a confidentiality agreement.”
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is now available for streaming on Netflix and also stars Tati Gabrielle, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis and Ross Lynch.
