The Transformers franchise has amassed an assortment of riches at the international box office. It’s no surprise that the powers that be would try to capitalize on such a lucrative project. The first trailer for the Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, has been released. The new film, which will be directed by Travis Knight, takes place in 1987, where the titular Transformer finds refuge in a junkyard in a small beach town in California.

The trailer opens with the voice of the late Bernie Mac, who played used car dealer Bobby Bolivia in the first installment of the Transformers franchise, reciting the lines, “The cars pick their drivers. It’s a mystical bond between man and machine.” Bumblebee stars actress Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie, an 18-year-old girl grappling with adolescence when she discovers Bumblebee is a seemingly erroneous yellow Volkswagen bug. However, she soon realizes the Bumblebee is no ordinary car. The film, which also stars Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is set to arrive in theaters this Christmas.
