This week Cam Anthony was named the winner of NBC’s reality singing show, The Voice. Beating out Victor Solomon, Rachel Mac, Jordan Matthew Young and runner-up Kenzie Wheeler, Anthony was secured a $100,000 contract with Universal Music Group. Though the contract comes with exposure to a large fan base, for Anthony, this isn’t his first rodeo with becoming an entertainment sensation.

If Anthony’s voice sounds familiar, it’s because the now-20-year-old is a YouTube sensation. At the age of 12, Anthony had covers of Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man” and Lorde’s “Royals” which went viral. He also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Showwhere it was revealed that he’d been singing since the age of four.

On Anthony’s win, his coach, judge Blake Shelton said: “I want to try to be serious here for just a second and not joke around, because this is a big deal. After being on this show 20 seasons, and on the 20th season, God put this young man in my life here on The Voice that may change everything for this show.”

The Voice has struggled sometime now for launching the music careers of its winners. Shelton and former judge, Adam Levine have publicly criticized the label’s lack of education for stagnant results with each winner.

Shelton previously said, “One of the most frustrating things for me, as a coach on this show year after year, is they win this record deal from Universal, and so many times the ball’s been dropped.”

With his unique background, perhaps Anthony can be the winner to change this trajectory.
