This week’s episode of NBC’s This Is Us saw one relationship ending while another one began.

The episode — titled “Katoby” which aired Tuesday — saw Kate (Chrissy Metz) officially ending her marriage to Toby (Chris Sullivan). It also highlighted the start of Kate’s romance with Phillip (Chris Geere), which coincidentally started the same day she and Toby signed their divorce papers.

"Katoby" detailed the the fall of Kate and Toby's marriage.

Fans got to see how Kate and Toby’s marriage got to a place of no return. At first, the pair decided to attend couple’s therapy in an attempt to save their relationship. Though it seemed like therapy was working, Toby and Kate found themselves fighting six months into their sessions.

At their 16-month mark in therapy, Kate and Toby’s therapist suggested they have dinner together, just the two of them, so they could talk. During the meal, the two started yelling at each other about parenting their kids, causing Kate to call it quits.

The episode also revealed how Kate and Phillip got together.

As Kate and Toby began their divorce proceedings, Kate embarked on a relationship with Phillip. Though Kate questions why Phillip had taken an interest in her given her “complicated” love life, he assured her that he was committed to making their relationship work.

“I am trying to be happy again and you make me happy,” Phillip says during their episode.

During a flash-forward scene later on in the episode, Kate and Phillip get engaged. Meanwhile, Kate and Toby learn how to co-parent their two children together.

"Katoby" showed a happy ending for Kate and Toby's love story.

The episode wraps by revealing what Kate told Toby on the day they signed their divorce papers.

“This is not how our story ends. Just because our marriage is over doesn’t mean our story is over,” she said. “We were meant to find each other in that weight loss group. We were meant to be together. And now, we’re meant to be apart, and I know that one day you will see it.”

Those words finally made sense to fans as it put into perspective what Toby actually meant when he called Kate the morning of her wedding to Phillip early on in the episode.

“I know you’re getting married in a few hours, congratulations. I just wanted to say, Kate, you know what you said to me the day we signed our divorce papers,” he said. “I want you to know that I see it now. I’m sorry it took me so long. If only I’d had a crystal ball. If I could have seen the way this all ended up.”
