Beth Pearson’s backstory is finally taking form.

Fresh off the news that Phylicia Rashad is set to portray Beth Pearson’s mother on This Is Us, it looks like Susan Kelechi Watson’s beloved character is getting a more fleshed out story for Season 3.

In the vein of characters like Kevin and Randall, viewers can prepare to see versions of Beth during both her teenage and child years. Rachel Noami Hilson and Akira Akbar have signed on to the show to portray teen Beth and child Beth, respectively. The roles will be of a recurring capacity. In addition, Supergirl actor Carl Lumbly will make a guest appearance as Beth’s father. Lumbly is also known for his iconic role as Marcus Petrie on Cagney & Lacey, as well as Agent Marcus Dixon on Alias.

Hilson, Akbar and Lumbly are set to first appear in “Our Little Island Girl,” the February 19 episode of This Is Us that will be devoted to Beth’s backstory.
