After a very long wait, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has released its first glimpse at what is in store for the fourth installment of the Thor saga.

Marvel Studios dropped the very first trailer and poster for Thor: Love and Thunder. The film stars Chris Hemsworth returning as the God of Thunder as he embarks on “a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods.”

The film also stars:

Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, Tessa Thompson (King Valkyrie), Taika Waititi (Korg) and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster).

The movie is directed by Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum.

While we don’t get a lot of things happening in the trailer, we do see appearances from the Guardians of the Galaxy, an appearance by Zeus (presumably played by Russell Crowe) and the first shot of Portman as Mighty Thor.

Taika Waititi calls 'Thor: Love and Thunder' “the craziest film I’ve ever done."

While speaking with Empire in July 2021, Taika Waititi opened up about the film, noting that it’s a project that “shouldn’t make sense.”

“Well, just between (me and) you and the readers, I’ve done some crazy s**t in my life. I’ve lived, like, ten lifetimes. But it’s the craziest film I’ve ever done,” he said.“If you wrote down all the elements of this film, it shouldn’t make sense. It’s almost like it shouldn’t be made. If you walked into a room and said, ‘I want this and this and this.’ Who’s in it? These people. What are you going to call it? Love And Thunder. I mean, you’d never work again. Maybe I won’t after this.”

Waititi added, “It’s very different from Ragnarok. It’s crazier. I’ll tell you what’s different. There’ll be far more emotion in this film. And a lot more love. And a lot more thunder. And a lot more Thor, if you’ve seen the photos.”

Thor: Love and Thunder hit theaters July 8, 2022.
