'Tiana' Animated Series, Sci-fi Series 'Iwájú' Announced At Disney+

Among Disney’s animation projects announced at Disney’s Investor Day were Tiana and Iwájú.

Tiana is a musical animated series that will be a TV spinoff of The Princess and the Frog. Other details have not been announced yet for the series, projected for 2022.

Iwájú is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Disney Animation and the Pan-African entertainment company Kugali. The two entities are teaming up for the new science-fiction series, which will debut in 2022 on Disney+.

Set in Lagos, the series will explore “deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo.”

Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer, said she noticed Kugali (founded by Fikayo Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim and Tolu Olowofoyeku) after reading an article about a Pan-African comic book that wanted to “kick Disney in the arse.”

She explained, “I was intrigued. Here was three talented comic book artists. Their dream was to bring African stories created by an African artist to the world, highlighting the diversity of cultures, histories, and voices across the continent. Their talents as storytellers blew us away. I’m proud to announce the first of its kind collaboration to bring original long for series to Disney+.”

Aside from these two series, Disney Animation also has the following set at the streamer: Baymax, Zootopia and Moana.
