Tone Bell has been tapped as the male lead in an upcoming CBS comedy pilot, Fam.

He joins series regulars former The Vampire Diaries lead Nina Dobrev, Odessa Adlon, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Brian Michael Stokes, with the latter two portraying his parents.

The series revolves around “Clem, (Dobrev) whose dreams of an upstanding life with her new fiancé and his upstanding family (Mitchell and Ralph) are dashed when her younger train wreck half-sister (Adlon) comes to live with her to escape their train wreck of a father.” Bell will play the fiancé, Jay, “a sophisticated NYU history professor who comes from old money, but is refreshingly unaffected and down-to-earth despite his refined background. Deeply in love with Clem he proposes to her — much to the delight of his parents, Walt and Rose, who think Clem is a real catch. But he learns that Clem has not been completely honest about a few key elements in her life… for example, her father isn’t actually dead… and it drives a wedge of mistrust between them that may not be easily mended.”

Bell was a series regular on Netflix’s Disjointed and was recurring on CBS’s 9JKL. He has a Showtime comedy special set to premiere soon. Ralph has a recurring arc on Claws this upcoming season. For Mitchell, this is the first major television role for the Broadway giant in a while. He’s recently had recurring arcs on Mr. Robot and Madam Secretary.
