Tony Award Nominations: Major Love Shown To Jeremy Pope, 'Choir Boy' And 'Ain't Too Proud'

Tony Award Nominations: Major Love Shown To Jeremy Pope, 'Choir Boy' And 'Ain't Too Proud'

The nominations for the 2019 Tony Awards were announced Tuesday and Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations is among the leaders with 12 nominations, including a nomination for Best Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Derrick Baskin. Choir Boy, the acclaimed play that follows a group of young, Black students at Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, also received multiple nominations, including Best Play for Moonlight writer Tarell Alvin McCraney and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Jeremy Pope.

Pope is a double nominee, as he’s also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Ain’t Too Proud, along with his castmate Ephraim Sykes. Dominique Morisseau is also nominated for Best Book of a Musical for Ain’t Too Proud. André De Shieldreceived his third Tony nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical in Hadestown.  Amber Gray and Lilli Cooper were nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for their roles in Tootsie and Hadestown, respectively.

The 2019 Tony Awards will air on CBS on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at 8:00 PM EST.
