Kenny Anderson in "Mr. Chibbs"
Kenny Anderson in “Mr. Chibbs”

Former NBA star Kenny Anderson was one of the best high school basketball players ever. Growing up in Queens, he was scouted for the NBA when he was in the sixth grade and at the age of 14 was already on “Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee.” After two high-profile years at Georgia Tech and a Final Four appearance, Kenny left college early to become the number 2 pick in the NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets. He played in the 1994 All-Star game and while he had a great career with nine different teams over 15 years, he never fully lived up to the heights of his early promise.

Directed by Jill Campbell, “Mr. Chibbs” catches up with Kenny today, reeling from his mother’s death and a subsequent DUI that caused him to lose a high school coaching job. He’s also still dealing with the explosive reveal that he was sexually abused when he was younger. The father of eight children, Kenny is now learning to be the the parent he never had time to be. Coming to terms with his past as he searches for a meaningful future, he is looking to dedicate himself to helping inner city youth who’ve been similarly subjected to sexual abuse. Combining unseen footage with raw moments of reflection, “Mr. Chibbs” explores what happens when the talent fades and a sports legend searches for a meaningful future.
