Terrence Howard and Macy Gray are members of the cast of writer/director Knate Gwaltney’s feature film debut, the indie drama titled “Cardboard Boxer,” which also stars Thomas Haden Church and Boyd Holbrook, in a story about a homeless Los Angeles man who becomes the target of a group of rich, troublesome teens who get their kicks by paying homeless people to fight each other.

I recall a real-life news story about this ridiculousness several years ago. The privileged paying the underprivileged to fight each other, while they video-tape, and eventually upload to video sharing sites like YouTube. Such nice kids today, huh? Gwaltney’s film was possibly inspired by this.

The film’s official synopsis reads: Willie (Church), homeless and on skid row, is coerced by two teens to fight other men for cash. Now involved in a violent world he can’t understand and with few human connections beyond a girl’s diary he found, Willie struggles to find a way out.

Promising an unflinching look at the lives of the displaced and forgotten members of society, “Cardboard Boxer” will be released by Well Go USA in USA theaters on September 16th, 2016.
