In a surprise appearance, Eminem performed at the 2020 Oscars Sunday night. He came on stage rapping “Lose Yourself,” which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song back in 2003. 

By the looks on everyone’s faces, it was clear no one knew Marshall Mathers was in the building.

While most of the Black audience members — which wasn’t many — looked excited as they rapped along, many of the white people were very confused. 

Although the song, which appeared on the soundtrack for 8 Mile, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it dropped and is regarded as one of the greatest hits, it seems many people don’t actually know the beat as everyone was bobbing their heads to a different rhythm. 

Martin Scorsese simply fell asleep during the performance. 

People watching at home seemed just as shocked as those in attendance, especially because "Lose Yourself" is a solid 18 years old. 

Just like the audience, a few did enjoy the performance and had high hopes for other possible surprise guests. 

Despite the varying reactions, the 47-year-old, who is the only solo rap artist to be awarded an Oscar, did get a standing ovation from the crowd. 

Following the awards show, the rapper thanked the Academy for allowing him to come back, considering he was not present to accept his award 17 years ago. 

Other Sunday night performances included Cynthia Erivo's “Stand Up” from Harriet and Janelle Monáe performing her 2010 song "Come Alive" which was reworked to serve as an introduction to nominated movies.
