Tyler Perry wants audiences to get to laugh during the upcoming Sister Act 3.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry gave an update on Sister Act 3, saying that screenwriting is underway. He also said that the film’s star, Whoopi Goldberg, is “excited” to be back in the Sister Act universe.

“The script is being written, and I am the producer on it–not directing,” he said. “We brought on an incredible director [Tim Federle] and Whoopi’s really excited. I think that this is just what the country needs. We need that feel-good moment in the movies where you go, ‘Oh my God, I left there singing.’ That’s my hope.”

What we know:

In 2018, it was first announced that Insecure co-executive producer Regina Hicks and mixed-ish showrunner Karin Gist (who was on Fox’s Star at the time) were on the script.

Back in 2018, Goldberg also said, “We’ve been all over Disney begging. They’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. It won’t be Sister Act 3. It will be a brand new rendition of Sister Act, and I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was a part of it.”

Perry is only producing.

The fact that Perry is not directing and is only producing highlights a revelation he talked about earlier in the interview regarding letting go of some of the control he’s had over his productions. He said in the coming years, he will be hiring more writers and directors to take over his projects, allowing him to focus on other things.

“Every morning, after I work out, I start writing at 7 and don’t finish until 7 in the evening. I do that every day until it’s done. I love it, and I love directing for 12- or 15-hour days,” he said. “But I realize there’s so much more that I could be doing if I were to hand some of the other stuff off–rather than doing it all myself.”
