Tyler Perry recently ignited a lot of discourse on social media after he revealed he was the sole writer for all of his shows currently on the air, as well as several that are in development.

During a press junket interview for his new Netflix film, Tyler Perry’s A Fall from Grace, Perry told Shadow And Act that he is “very clear” about his audience.

“I am very specific about who I’m writing for, who I’m writing to, and whether there’s a discourse, that’s on them. For me, I know exactly what I’m doing. I know exactly who I’m speaking to,” he said. “That’s why The Haves and Have Nots returned at number one. That’s why The Oval is number one. That’s why Sistas is number two. So I have the one, two and three top shows among African American people, so if people don’t get that, that’s on them. I got me. I know what I’m doing. So whatever discourse it is, they can have that.”

The tweet that started the firestorm for Perry was made on January 6. Perry tweeted a video of all of the scripts he’s written for his various productions with the caption, “WORK ETHIC!! Come on. Let’s go get 2020!!!”

A Fall From Grace is currently streaming on Netflix.
