Viola Davis is on her way to potential EGOT status.
The Woman King star has been nominated for Grammy in the category of Best Audio Book Narration, and Storytelling Recording, for her narration of her book, Finding Me. She will have stiff competition when it comes to getting the Grammy in this category. According to Entertainment Weekly, EGOT winner Mel Brooks, Jamie Foxx, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Questlove are also nominated.
Davis' journey to EGOT status is no small feat.
According to Entertainment Weekly, she won two Tony Awards, one for her 2001 role in King Hedley II and in 2010 for her role in Fences. She reprised the same role for Denzel Washington’s 2016 adaptation of Fences, earning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Davis’ Emmy came in 2015 when she won for Oustanding Lead Actress for her role in How to Get Away with Murder.
There's still potential for Davis to earn even more hardware during the upcoming awards season
The Woman King is easily a film that could be in the running for Oscars nominations, with Davis’ commanding role taking center stage. As Aramide A. Tinubu wrote for Shadow and Act, the film is “[a] layered film about humanity, sisterhood, change, and facing the past.”
“[Gina] Prince-Bythewood uses every arsenal in her tool belt to deliver an astounding piece of cinema,” wrote Tinubu. “Everything about The Woman King is deliciously enthralling, from the viciously fought battles to the glittering light on the varied tones of dark brown skin.”
Davis’ next film is G20, in which she’ll play the President of the United States who gets held hostage by terrorists at the G20 Summit. Davis’ character, Taylor Sutton, must “use all of her diplmatic and military skills to protect her family, her other presidents and, of course, the whole planet,” according to the film’s description.
