Ahead of possibly scooping up some Oscars, Black Panther first made a stop at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, where the film won two awards.
One was for the film’s Ludwig Göransson-composed score, and the second was for best rap performance. “King Dead” by Kendrick Lamar (who produced the soundtrack), Jay Rock and Future won the latter, tying with Anderson.Paak’s “Bubblin.”
The film’s first of two wins went to its score, which was composed by Ludwig Göransson and serves as the Swedish composer’s third cinematic collaboration with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. The film got eight nods for the soundtrack, including album, record and song of the year.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the movie’s film supervisor says that Lamar was only going to contribute one song but was commissioned to the entire album after the chemistry between the rapper and Ryan Coogler formed. “We had one meeting with Kendrick and we knew in that meeting that he understood what we were trying to do. He and [director] Ryan Coogler were having a completely different connection than you normally get in those kinds of meetings. They understood each other on a different level.”
We’ll learn if Black Panther picks up any Oscar wins on February 24.
