The film stars Keke Palmer, Haley Ramm, Aunjanue Ellis, Vanessa Morgan,  Edi Gathegi and DMX. It is written and directed by Christine Crokos.

The movie has been in development for some time. A first trailer premiered late last year, but has now been nearly scrubbed from the internet besides a few still photos. It is unknown if Daniels’ involvement means anything about the original concept/filming of the movie would change.

This will be the first film executive produced by Daniels. He has directed and produced films like Precious and The Butler and is behind Fox’s TV hits Empire and Star.

According to THR, who was the first to report Daniels’ attachment to the film, says, “Pimp centers on Wednesday (Palmer) and is set on the rough streets of the Bronx. Wednesday is born into this gritty world of hustling where she learns the game from her dad. Once he’s gone, she is left to look out for her mother (Ellis) and her girlfriend Nikki (Ramm). In need of more money, Nikki decides to hit the streets for Wednesday for a dream at a better life. In a ferocious battle of survival, Wednesday comes face to face with a male pimp (Gathegi) who runs a more dangerous game, leaving Wednesday to fight for love and risk all to save Nikki.”

Gersh is leading the domestic sale of the film.

Palmer, who says she produced the film as well, posted a new trailer on Instagram, noting that she’s been working on the film since she was 18. Now 25, she’s excited for its release.

A special screening at Tribeca was hosted Friday, April 20.
