From American Horror Story to American Crime Story, Ryan Murphy is certainly no stranger to creating compelling television dramas for viewers to binge on. Now, the acclaimed showrunner has another show to keep our eyes glued to television screens. The first trailer for his latest show Pose hit the internet today (May 3) and evokes images reminiscent of Paris Is Burning. The musical drama, set in 1980s New York City, has already garnered headlines for its groundbreaking cast. The history-making Pose will feature the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles and the largest recurring LGBTQ cast ever for a scripted television series.

The brainchild of Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals, Pose “looks at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.”

Evan Peters and Kate Mara play New Jersey couple “Stan” and “Patty,” who get sucked into the glamour and intrigue of New York City in the 1980s. James Van Der Beek plays Peters’ financial kingpin boss “Matt.” Tatiana Maslany was set to star as a dance teacher, but now the role will be played by Charlayne Woodard after the role was reimagined following the pilot.

After a six-month nationwide search, the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles ever for a scripted series was assembled. The transgender cast includes MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross.

Also co-starring is Billy Porter and newcomers Ryan Jamaal Swain and Dyllon Burnside.

Pose was written by co-creators and executive producers Murphy, Falchuk and Steven Canals, with Murphy directing the first two episodes. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson also serve as executive producers alongside fellow executive producers Alexis Martin Woodall, Sherry Marsh and Erica Kaye. Janet Mock and Our Lady J will also serve as producers. The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.

Hollywood has just started scratching the surface when it comes to the three-dimensional depiction of transgender people on screen. With the acclaim of Sean Baker’s indie flick Tangerine and the anticipation of Pose rapidly building, this will hopefully usher in more inclusion of transgender actors and characters in film and television.

Pose premieres on FX on Sunday, June 3. Check out the trailer for the much-anticipated series below.
