Over a year ago, I did an interview with Chicago-based filmmaker Christopher Nolen (as I said back then, not to be confused with that other Christopher Nolan with an "a’), which you can read here.

Nolen is in a different market altogether, making his own independently-financed feature films entirely in Chicago, with familiar name actors, being quite successful it at too. He’s a great example of the many independent black filmmakers who struggle and still succeed in making their films totally outside the Hollywood studio system.

Last year, he released his fifth feature film, "72 Hours," starring Harry Lennix, Cynda Williams ("Mo’ Better Blues," "One False Move"), Erica Hubbard, and Terri J. Vaughn, and now he’s about to release his latest film, "Zodiac Sign," in limited theatrical release and VOD.

Written, produced, and directed by Nolen, along with producer Tressa Epps and co-producer Crosby Tatum, and starring Caryn Ward Ross, Tammy Townsend, Tanjareen Thomas, Carl Anthony Payne II (Martin), Brad James, Timon Kyle Durrett, Clint Lewis, David Leonard, Nekia Nichelle and Nolen himself, the romantic comedy deals with an elementary school principal (Ross) who is also a childless divorcee, who’s been single for five years. 

Ross is "the only unwed woman left in her crew, and her best friends (played by Townsend and Thomas), are determined to help her change that. The women consult the laws of the zodiac to find bachelors whose astrological signs are most compatible with Ross’ complicated Capricorn. She agrees to date a few men from the zodiac-approved dating pool, and soon discovers that nothing is as it seems on her quest to find ‘Mr. Right Sign."

Admittedly this is a more light hearted venture for Nolen, who says that he made this film "because I have heard so many people talk about astrology for years regarding love and I just thought it would be a fun movie to write, produce and direct."
