When compared to other holiday traditions such as Christmas and Hanukkah, Kwanzaa is a celebration that is rarely shown represented on film and television. Notable representations of Kwanzaa have been showcased on animated shows such as Rugrats and The Proud Family.

In a whimsical throwback clip from Sesame Street, a young Tyler James Williams and Tyrel Jackson Williams are shown celebrating Kwanzaa with his family. The Williams brothers are shown lighting candles. Adhering to the tradition of Kwanzaa, Williams’ family fathers around to celebrate the feast’s seven principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Family and friends gather together for feast on the sixth night of Kwanzaa to celebrate.

At the end of the night, Tyler James Williams gets his own present, a drum set.

Tyler James Williams would later go on to star in Everybody Hates Chris and the Justin Simien-directed film, Dear White People. He also stars in the upcoming ABC series, Whiskey Cavalier. Tyrel Jackson Williams starred in Disney XD’s Lab Rats and IFC’s Brockmire.

The Williams brothers frequently appeared on Sesame Street in the early 2000s.
