nullI remember the so-called prequel being announced back in 2010; at the time there wasn’t much info on it – definitely not what actors would appear in it.

We would later learn that Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and John Hawkes (star of Sundance 2012 hit "The Surrogate") had signed on to star in the film, and are joined by Jennifer Aniston, Tim Robbins, Isla Fisher and Will Forte.

Dan Schechter directed the film from his own script adaption.

Titled "Life of Crime," based on Elmore Leonard’s novel "The Switch" (the original 1997 film, "Jackie Brown," which starred Pam Grier, was also based on an Elmore Leonard novel, titled "Rum Punch"), the dark caper comedy follows the kidnapping of the wife (Aniston) of a corrupt real estate developer (Robbins) by two common criminals (Bey and Hawkes), who intend to extort the husband with inside information about his crooked business and off-shore accounts. But, their plan takes an unexpected turn when the husband decides he’d actually rather not pay the ransom to get back his wife, setting off a sequence of double crosses and plot twists that one would expect from an Elmore Leonard original.

So obviously the prequel will focus on the relationship between Ordell and Gara, characters played by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro in Jackie Brown, and now are being played by Yasiin Bey and John Hawkes.

And, by the way, Quentin Tarantino doesn’t have anything to do with this film, although he gave his "blessings."

So, expect a whole new look both in front of and behind the camera, in a film that made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, as the festival’s closing night film!

"Jackie Brown" was both a commercial and critical success, raking in over $72 million in box office worldwide, on a $12 million budget. It also earned co-star Robert Forster an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions will release "Life Of Crime" in theaters on August 29th, 2014.
