After stringing fans along for some time by not outright canceling the show, Fox has reportedly put the nail in Wayward Pines’  coffin.

The Twin Peaks-esque series was initially intended to be a one-off event series, but was renewed for a second season.

From M. Night Shyamalan and based on the Blake Couch novels, the first season of the sci-fi thriller was largely favored by critics. It starred Matt Dillon as an FBI investigating mysterious agent disappearances in an Idaho town, before realizing he’s trapped in a post-apocalyptic universe where Wayward Pines is the only town on earth left and evolutionary aberrations (called Abbies) threaten the remaining existence of human life.

Terrence Howard, Carla Gugino Juliette Lewis also starred in the first season, but their characters were written off early because they booked other commitments due to the show’s shooting schedule (although Howard returned for a brief Season 2 stint). Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers, also worked on Season 1.

The second season had a soft reboot with many main cast members departing. Jason Patric was introduced as its new leading man and Dijmon Honsou as a series regular (with Simone Missick guest-starring as his wife). But the show failed to recapture its magic from the Dillon-led first season and had a botched plotline.

Multiple industry publications have learned that the show is officially not returning, despite Fox executives suggesting during last years TCA Press Tour that a Season 3 could happen.
