A first teaser for OWN’s upcoming original drama series “Queen Sugar,” from Ava DuVernay, aired last night during the season premiere of another new OWN drama series, “Greenleaf.”
“Queen Sugar” chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings – Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) – who come together after a family tragedy to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.
Tina Lifford, Dondré Whitfield, Timon Kyle Durrett, Nicholas L. Ashe, Bianca Lawson, Greg Vaughan and Henry G. Sanders are also cast members.
The series is based on the novel by author Natalie Baszile; each episode was directed by a woman director, with many of the candidates pulled from a pool of independent filmmakers like Tina Mabry, Victoria Mahoney, Neema Barnette, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, and Tanya Hamilton.
Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay and Melissa Carter are exec producers.
DuVernay developed “Queen Sugar” for television.
It is produced for OWN by Warner Horizon Television.
