South African filmmaker Darrell Roodt (also the director of Winnie – the Jennifer Hudson Winnie Mandela film) has signed on to direct a found-footage thriller that will be set in South Africa – Johannesburg specifically, from a script penned by an American screenwriter, Tyler Hisel, titled Safari.

The film will center on a group of American tourists stranded in the "South African wilderness," as the synopsis states, and will star Rocky Myers, Kim Argetsinger, Chloe Kirby and Robert Watkins; none of them is black, by the way, as I'm sure you're wondering.

And by the way, professional animal trainer-behaviorist Kevin Richardson has been tapped to provide the African animals that will be in the "wilderness" throughout the production.

So, what do we have here? It's a found-footage thriller, so, right away, that sets you up for what you can probably expect: Danger! A bunch of white American kids head over to the exotic, dangerous, mysterious regions of the "South African wilderness" where I'm sure they'll experience lots of very evil things (maybe even some strange black South African rituals, or, gasp, something monstrous) which, of course, will all be recorded on a digital camcorder, and eventually *found* and released, found-footage film style, as each of them will likely be dispatched one at a time.

Meh… I'll pass.

Although, who knows… maybe it'll be a play on the ignorance of Americans when it comes to continental Africa.

Anton Ernst of Thaba Media is producing Safari and Hisel and manager Alexander Robb of Insignia Entertainment are on board as executive producers.

Production is set to begin in a matter of days. 

Roodt's film, before Safari, aka Little One, was selected as South Africa's entry into the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar race. We're still waiting to learn to fate of Winnie.
