With 'Eclipsed' Heading to Broadway, Danai Gurira's 'Familiar' Announces Cast With March Opening Set

FamiliarAfter a sold-out run Off-Broadway at The Public Theater last fall, Danai Gurira’s critically-acclaimed play "Eclipsed" (starring Lupita Nyong’o) next heads to Broadway, opening in February at the Golden Theater. But the playwright and actress ("The Walking Dead," "Mother of George") is already prepping the run of her next play, Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, titled "Familiar."

Danai GuriraPreview performances begin Friday, February 12, in advance of a March 3 opening and will run through March 27, which will also be around the same time that "Eclipsed" will be on Broadway, so Gurira will be busy during that time. Meanwhile "The Walking Dead" returns for the second half of the season on February 14.

This will be the New York premiere for the play and casting has been announced.

Written by Danai Gurira and directed by Rebecca Taichman, the cast for "Familiar" includes Ito Aghayere, Joby Earle, Melanie Nicholls-King, Roslyn Ruff, Harold Surratt, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Joe Tippett, and Tony Award winner Tamara Tunie.

The synopsis for "Familiar" reads: It’s winter in Minnesota, and a Zimbabwean family is preparing for the wedding of their eldest daughter, a first-generation American. But when the bride insists on observing a traditional African custom, it opens a deep rift in the household. Rowdy and affectionate, "Familiar" pitches tradition against assimilation, drawing a loving portrait of a family: the customs they keep, and the secrets they bury.

The production will feature scenic design by Clint Ramos, costume design by Tony Award winner Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Tyler Micoleau, and sound design by Tony Award winner Darron L. West.

"Familiar" had its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre in February 2014, also under the direction of Rebecca Taichman.
