Work-In-Progress Screening Of "Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth" At BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Fest

Updates on a project we've been following for about a year now since its IndieGoGo campaign was posted here… award-winning British filmmaker, Pratibha Parmar's documentary feature film by about writer and activist Alice Walker, titled Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth.

The film, which includes contributions from Danny Glover and Steven Spielberg, among others, has been in the making for some 5 years with a rough cut completed after the filmmaker was able to raise a whopping $55,000 via IndieGoGo last year.

And for our readers in London, you'll be glad to know that you'll be one of the first to see footage from the feature doc, when the British Film Institute's London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival previews the film, first on the March 29th, in a feature programme at the National Film Theatre, where director Pratibha will show clips from it in a work-in-progress screenng, and talk about the making of the film with festival programmer Nazmia Jamal.

Here's how the program descibes it:

We are delighted to welcome Pratibha Parmar to the Festival to share a taste of her new film, a feature documentary on Alice Walker, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of ‘The Color Purple’. This compelling film looks at key moments in the life of an artist, a self-confessed renegade and outlaw. Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth follows the extraordinary journey of Walker from a childhood of poverty and racist violence in the segregated South, her subsequent involvement in the civil rights movement (including her historic interracial marriage), through to the release of the groundbreaking and wildly successful novel ‘The Color Purple’ and its subsequent transformation into a controversial Hollywood movie. In 2010 she was awarded the LennonOno Peace Award for her ongoing humanitarian work. In this exclusive event Parmar will talk about the huge piece of work that has been the making of Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth and premiere a selection of exclusive extracts from the forthcoming documentary.

Seats are selling fast so if you're interested, you should pick up your tickets ASAP (10 pounds each); you can do so HERE.
