It's official: Zendaya will return for the third film in the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man franchise.
Tom Holland, who portrays the titular character, gave the information away in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer to promote his new film, Onward. He also revealed the film will shoot this summer. Zendaya plays Michelle (aka MJ), the love interest to Holland's Spidey.
He said in part, “We will be shooting Spider-Man 3 in July in Atlanta. I’m super happy about it...Zendaya will most definitely be in the film." When asked about the duo's relationship, Holland remained coy. “As to the relationship between Peter and MJ, I’m not too sure what it will be," he teased.
The franchise's third film could possibly be the final Spider-Man film from this era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Sony decided to part ways with Disney on producing the films, it was thought that the character would no longer be in the MCU. As days passed, the two came together on an agreement that would ensure that the third film was made, as well as future appearance of Holland as the character in one more Marvel Studios film outside of that.
Zendaya is currently in production on the second season of Euphoria, which is expected later this year HBO.
