Hannibal Buress
Hannibal Buress

UPDATE: 9/1/16: The specific roles that several actors have been cast to play in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” movie have mostly been kept underwraps, including those to be played by Zendaya, Bokeem Woodbine, Abraham Attah, Garcelle Beauvais, Hannibal Buress and Donald Glover. An update (below) about 2 weeks ago tagged Zendaya as the new Mary Jane Watson, but Marvel/Sony have yet to confirm this.

Intentionally or not, Hannibal Buress revealed who his character is, during an interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, confirming a previous unverified rumor that he would be a gym teacher at Peter Parker’s high school.

“Small roles in big movies, that should be my thing. ‘Baywatch’ and the Spider-Man movie, coming out next year,” Buress said of two of his upcoming feature film roles. “In ‘Spider-Man’ I play a gym teacher. I play one of the dumb-ass characters that [doesn’t] realize he’s Spider-Man, he’s Peter Parker. ‘Oh man, this guy’s really athletic!’”

So there you have it. Unless he’s intentionally misleading us, it’s case closed in Buress’ case.

Now we wait to learn about who the other actors will play.

Directed by Jon Watts, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is slated for a July 7, 2017 release.

UPDATE: 8/19/16: It’s been announced that Zendaya’s previously-mysterious role in the upcoming Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios Spider-Man reboot, is none-other-than Mary Jane Watson – Peter Parker’s love interest. Zendaya is part of a diverse cast that also includes Bokeem Woodbine, Abraham Attah, Garcelle Beauvais, Hannibal Buress and Donald Glover.

Certainly “diversity” isn’t just black & white, so while it’s obviously great to see a cast that includes actors of African descent (as this is a black film/TV-focused blog), there’s still much to be done. And, ultimately, while a work and character of fiction, it’s still very much a film that tells a story centered around a white, hetero, male lead.

Jon Watts is directing “Spider-Man: Homecoming” for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, which is set for a summer 2017 release.

The Wrap was first to report Zendaya’s casting as Mary Jane.

UPDATE 6/30/16: The cast of the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios picture continues to add to its diverse cast. A week after the announcement that Bokeem Woodbine and Abraham Attah had been cast in the movie, Garcelle Beauvais has also now joined the cast, although, as has been the case with previous castings, her specific role is being kept a secret.

Garcelle Beauvais joins a cast that already includes Donald Glover, Zendaya, Abraham Attah and Bokeem Woodbine. But we still have no idea what roles each of these actors has signed up to play. So I’d suggest holding off any excitement over their castings until we know more.

Catch up on past details on the project below.

UPDATE 6/23/16: The cast of the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios picture continues to add to its diverse cast. Two days after the announcement that Abraham Attah had been cast in the movie, Bokeem Woodbine has also now joined the cast, playing a third villain; although, as has been the case with previous castings, his specific role is being kept a secret. Also “Better Call Saul” star Michael Mando has joined the cast as well.

Woodbine joins a cast that already includes Donald Glover, Zendaya, and Abraham Attah. But we still have no idea what roles each of these actors has signed up to play. So I’d suggest holding off any excitement over their castings until we know more.

The cast for Sony Pictures’ upcoming re-reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” continues to diversify as Sergio noted yesterday, when it was announced that Hannibal Buress had been cast in a role that was not made public.

Abraham Attah, star of last year’s critically-acclaimed “Beasts of No Nation,” has also joined the cast; and, as has been the case for almost every actor who’s been cast in the film (other than the key players, like the title character), Attah’s role is being kept a mystery for now.

Attah and Buress are recent additions to maybe the most diverse cast of any “Spider-Man” movie ever made, that also includes Donald Glover, Zendaya, Kenneth Choi and Tony Revolori.

I’m certainly looking forward to finding out what role each of these actors has signed up to play.

Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Marisa Tomei is Aunt May. And Michael Keaton is playing a/the villain, The Vulture.

This marks Attah’s first major role since “Beasts.”

Jon Watts is directing the film for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producing.
