Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has announced its acquisition of A24’s Sundance hit Zola for international release.

The film, based on the viral 2015 Twitter thread by A’ziah King, will be distributed by SPWA internationally except for China, Japan and North America. VVS Films has acquired distribution rights for Canada. A24, which is covering American release of the film, is setting the film for a summer theatrical release date.

The film is directed by Janicza Bravo and stars Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Nicholas Braun and Colman Domingo. The film was produced by Christine Vachon, David Hinojosa, Vince Jolivette, Elizabeth Haggard, Dave Franco, Gia Walsh and Kara Baker. The film follows the wild story posted by King as she recounted a story of crime, sex and harrowing escapes.

Our Sundance Film Festival review of the film reads, “Despite the fact that the film doesn’t quite follow through after hitting its stride, the movie is still a good time. Bravo continues to be a filmmaker to watch and these obnoxious characters will stay with viewers for some time. Long live Twitter.”
