Amazon Studios has announced its new three-picture and first-look film deal with Eddie Murphy. Under the deal, Murphy will star in three Amazon Studios films as well as develop original films for Amazon Studios and Prime Video. He will also have the potential to star in these projects.

Murphy’s deal comes after the financial success of Coming 2 America, which became the number one streamed movie its debut March 5 weekend. It also has the number one opening weekend of any steaming movie in 2021 so far, as well as the number one opening weekend of any streaming movie in the past 12 months after COVID theater closures. The film also came in at number one on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings among all streamed SVOD content.

Murphy’s comedic talent and entertaining skill were praised by Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke in a statement.
“Eddie is a legend both in front of and behind the camera,” she said. “With undeniable comedic and dramatic genius, he consistently delivers entertaining, original stories and characters to audiences around the world. We could not be more excited to help carry on the tradition and to officially welcome Eddie into the Amazon family.”

Murphy will be seen next in Kenya Barris’ upcoming film with similar themes as Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. As reported by Shadow and Act, the film’s plot remains under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter cited that the themes the film will explore will revolve around “an incisive examination of modern love and family dynamics and how clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences shape and affect relationships.” Murphy will star opposite Jonah Hill, and their characters are expected to “find themselves on opposite sides of some of those divides.”
