Jonathan Majors is giving Marvel fans a clue into how she’ll approach the many variations of Kang the Conqueror.
In a new Assembled special for Loki on Disney+, Majors revealed how he got into character for He Who Remains and what he has planned for when Kang the Conqueror official makes his debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

“I think with He Who Remains, the objective for me was to give me the largest canvas possible,” he said. “From that, as Kang begins to rear his head and do his deeds, in many ways, he has no choice but to be in opposition or be different from He Who Remains. That was the thing that grabbed me and pulled me into the role. Kang lives in so many iterations as He Who Remains says: ‘Reincarnation, baby.'”
Majors also said he referenced several films as inspiration for his iconic characterization of He Who Remains as a sketchy recluse. “The Wizard of Oz, Sunset Boulevard, Citizen Kane, [and] Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” were among the films Majors drew from, which makes sense, since all of these films center characters who are genius, talented, and off-center from a life of seclusion.
Majors said that he wanted to portray He Who Remains as “[t]he archetype of the wizard and what happens to him when he gets bored and becomes a trickster,” adding that “I think when we meet He Who Remains he’s on the borderline of those two things. You don’t really know where he’s at and I think the ambiguity of that is one of the wicked things about it.”
The full season of Loki, and the Loki episode of Assembled is streaming on Disney+. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is coming to theaters in 2022. Loki‘s second season will also debut in 2022.
