It doesn’t look like Candiace Dillard Bassett’s mother Dorothy will be attending Thanksgiving at her daughter’s new mansion. During part one of The Real Housewives of Potomac reunion special, Dillard immediately burst into tears when asked about the status of her husband Chris Bassett’s relationship with her mother. According to Dillard, things are so bad between the two that she doesn’t foresee a reconciliation of any sort any time soon.

Candiace Dillard says her family will never be the same

Reunion host Andy Cohen reminded Dillard that it was actually her mother who spearheaded the conversation regarding her husband working as her manager at the music video shoot for her single “Drive Back.” During the shoot, Dorothy went around to each of Dillard’s co-stars speaking of her disgust over the fact that Bassett reportedly quit his job after he married her daughter. She’s also not supportive of Bassett working as Dillard’s manager, and she feels Bassett is riding Dillard’s coattails.

“He’s really hurt,” Dillard said. “And as a wife, I don’t ever want to see my husband hurt, but especially not by my mom. It’s really hard, like, I cussed my mom out in a way that I shouldn’t have.”

Robyn Dixon asked whether or not Dillard believes her family would be in such a fragile state if it weren’t for the show.  “No. I feel like my family is never going to be the same,” Dillard replied, while Wendy Osefo chimed in, “Because of that incident? Oh my gosh.”

“My in-laws watch the show and I’m going to be with my family and I feel like I don’t belong there because my mom insulted my husband,” Dillard added. “I don’t know what to do, like, I don’t know how to fix it.”

Candiace Dillard says her mother feels justified in her beliefs

Dillard also noted that after watching the show, she confronted her mother. She says she cursed her mother out in a way that was not appropriate.

“What she said was incorrect and it was very disparaging to my husband,” she told Cohen.”

Dillard also says her mother is defending her actions. “[She claims] they were asking me questions,” she says her mother told her. “But no, you have autonomy over your own mouth.”

Some of her co-stars agree with Dorothy’s sentiments

Nearly everyone in the cast felt that Bassett working as Dillard’s manager is not a good idea. Gizelle Bryant was the most vocal, saying that she believes it’s a recipe for disaster and that it does appear Bassett is riding his wife’s coattails.

Ashley Darby offered a different perspective, believing that Bassett has lost his way since selling his D.C. barbeque restaurant. Bassett revealed during the Season 5 reunion that he sold his restaurant as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, he said he was leading a few virtual cooking classes and working on finalizing his cookbook.
